@dakroot True. What does more damage to the flock? Watching Nightmare on Elm Street or finding out their pastor has been banging women in the congregation —all while telling you how much he cherished marriage and his wife
It's actually astounding to me how many people think that gentle, tender, unyielding devotion across years isn't "real love" but ephemeral passions that burn out in a month and end in heartbreak is the truest love there is. It seems many people's hearts are bent toward self-destruction entirely
@TurkeyToads00 Yeah, that was almost a right of passage back then and people still talk about how traumatized they are decades later. If any genre doesn't sit well, for any reason, leave it be. Just because they exist doesn't mean we have to pay attention to them.
Seems like a good time to remind everyone that even the worst horror movies or metal albums won't be as spiritually damaging as some real people you'll meet in life. We're sounding alarms on art when we should be sounding the alarms on those who cause lasting, tangible damage.
That's why I prefer art. It allows me to spend time with the ideas of interesting people without getting personally close with them.
Keep your intimate social circle brutally exclusionary. Enjoy your art with discernment.
@DirdeeD@MattWalshBlog Taste and, honestly, somebody's sensitivity to stuff. The spectrum is big. If someone is emotionally harmed by certain works, no shame in avoiding it. Some people avoid fairytales, good for them.
The Lord made artists, and the Lord gave us imagination and creativity. Sometimes what we create is beautiful. Sometimes it's disturbing, grotesque, or thought-provoking. The Bible itself isn't exactly pleasant reading from cover to cover.
Art and literature have explored the darkest parts of human nature for centuries, including within Christianity. Depicting evil isn't the same as celebrating it, and acknowledging darkness isn't the same as embracing it.
If your conscience is troubled by any of it, then by all means, avoid it. But we should be careful not to impose our personal convictions on the consciences of others.
