On this day 496 years ago, the Augsburg Confession was formally presented to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V during the Diet of Augsburg.

Authored by Philip Melanchthon and approved by Martin Luther, the document served as the principal summary of the Lutheran faith and a plea for religious unity amidst the Reformation.

It continues to serve as the standard for confessional Lutherans today.
