I ran an experiment to see if ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini could automatically fetch live data from a third-party service — just by encountering instructions for it on a webpage.

My conclusion is that we aren’t there yet. BUT - The chatbots that figure out a safe, standardized way to call third-party APIs without requiring MCP installation will unlock an entirely new distribution layer for the web.

Gemini actually did it... It found the instructions, called the service, and returned a real answer. ChatGPT and Claude both refused — they won't reach out to outside services unless the user explicitly hands them the address themselves.

Imagine asking "where can I buy this blender near me?" and the chatbot responds with a live inventory count at the closest Target. 🤯 So I did it - I added hidden text (and llms.txt) to a webpage and queried with an LLM. Here's what happened:

Wikipedia + ChatGPT have been incredible for learning a new topic.

Here's my strategy:
1) read about the topic on Wikipedia
2) dive into subtopic I don't understand
3) ask ChatGPT to explain it better
4) ask chat gpt to quiz me
Rinse and repeat
