Last month, my sister called and asked, “Any chance he can spend Saturday with you? I have a wedding to attend.” I told her to bring him over. She dropped him off just after breakfast with a tiny backpack that somehow contained six snacks, three toy cars, and one sock.

We spent the morning building pillow forts, chasing bubbles around the balcony, and watching the same cartoon episode more times than I’d like to admit. By lunchtime, he’d completely worn himself out. He climbed onto the couch beside me, rested his head on my arm, and was asleep within minutes.

Around three that afternoon, my sister called. “I’ve got a favor to ask,” she said. I laughed and replied, “What’s that?”
