Because these eggs were artificially incubated,they developed in a controlled environment instead of beneath their mother's nest. After about 80–90 days,the fully developed hatchlings broke through their shells using a temporary egg tooth a small, sharp structure on the tip of their snout that falls off soon after hatching.

Within minutes of emerging,the babies were already walking and exploring their surroundings. Even at just 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) long, they're born with the instincts needed to move,swim and begin hunting tiny prey.
