Laurence Fishburne’s character in King of New York, Jimmy Jump, was originally written as an Italian-American mob enforcer. Fishburne had already been cast as Detective Thomas Flanigan, the film’s secondary cop role, but became fixated on playing Jimmy Jump instead and repeatedly lobbied Abel Ferrara for the part.

According to production accounts, Fishburne eventually showed up dressed as he imagined Jimmy Jump would look, already in character — and Ferrara cast him on the spot without an audition.

Fishburne then rebuilt the character from the ground up, transforming him into what he called cinema’s first “hip-hop gangster.” As Fishburne told Variety in 2025:

“Jimmy Jump, for me, is the first hip-hop gangster on film. It came from intuition, from being from New York, spending time in those neighborhoods, going to hip-hop shows, knowing graffiti writers and breakdancers. I was very much part of that culture. I even knew someone who called himself a hip-hop gangster — he wanted to be a rapper but also had another side business. And I thought, ‘Why haven’t I ever seen this type of character in movies?’”

The change also had a wider effect on the film. Once Jimmy Jump was reconceived, Ferrara filled out more of Frank White’s crew with actors of color, creating a multiracial criminal organization that echoed the real-life crew of 1970s mobster “Crazy Joe” Gallo, a Colombo capo known for associating with and recruiting black gangsters.
