Q13. I agree 100%. We will need time to incorporate Plan B into our class meetings, as well as support to make it happen. Knowing the whole school supports it makes it easier to use it in your room. #smithlearns
@smithelem_Noel Q13. I can see CPS working at our school as long as structures were put in place across the building (i.e. built in time for collaboration (with the students, parents, teammates and across disciplines), built in support, class coverage when needed-an all hands in approach.
To use Plan B whole class, you need to have expectations in place and a sense of community. I loved how well her students came together to solve a class problem. The use of Plan B whole class allows everyone's input in finding a solution. #smithlearns
On p. 208 Mrs. Woods attempts to use Plan B with her entire class to address a class issue. If you want to use Plan B with a group, what groundwork needs to be in place to make sure it’s successful? What is your reaction to how Plan B plays out with her entire class? #smithlearns
"I noticed", "strategies", "Let me see if I have this right", "I think I understand". I hear conversation between S and T. T is asking for input from S. T did not impose any solutions. Concerns: time, patience, follow through. #smithlearns
10. On pages 92-108 we see some of Plan B taking place. What were the actions and words that you think will contribute to making this a successful plan? What else do you think the staff should have said or done? What concerns do you have about this plan? #SmithLearns

Plan B has collab. between adults and st. It helps adults see what is making it diff. for the student to meet expectations. An obstacle might be when you have to use Emergency Plan B. Empathy helps to understand the student's difficulties and makes them feel heard. #smithlearns
9. What are some of the benefits of using Plan B? How does this plan differ from what you’ve used? What might be some obstacles to doing the three steps involved in Plan B? What are the benefits of the Empathy step? What might make this step hard to implement? #SmithLearns
Plan A is when adults try to solve a problem for a student by coming up with a solution. It doesn't involve the student and it is counterproductive. It is likely to cause more challenging behaviors in challeng. kids. It involves power and conflict. #smithlearns
8. When teachers’ expectations are unmet, they often respond with Plan A. What exactly is this plan? Even if teachers have been successful with this plan, how is this different from simply communicating an expectation? #smithlearns
Lagging skills provide you w more accurate, less judgmental ways of underst. and communicating about behav. chall. kids. Unsolved prob are unmet expectations. 1st step is to solve these prob. collab and proact. The ALSUP tool is a discuss. guide to discuss both. #SmithLearns
Q.7-Dr. Greene describes two culprits of children’s challenging behavior: lagging skills & unsolved problems. What is the difference between them? What does the author believe should be the first step in addressing challenging behavior & how can the ALSUP tool help? #SmithLearns
Most diagnoses don't give info about the skills the st is lacking and aren't useful. Knowing the specific lacking skills helps us to better understand how to help support the st. Diagnoses also don't reflect the st as a whole. Not all kids with ADHD lack same skills. #SmithLearns
Looking at the list of possible lagging skills. How does this compare to the diagnoses we are used to seeing in kids with challenging behavior (ADHD, bipolar disorder, etc.)? Why does the author prefer not to use these diagnoses? #smithlearns
Looking at the list, I can see why students lacking these skills would struggle behaviorally. These are skills necessary to learn appropriately. Lacking these skills makes it difficult, which in turn causes st. to act out. Esp maintaining focus and handling trans. #SmithLearns
Smith Staff Book Study Q.5: Dr. Greene proposes a long list of life skills that kids with challenging behavior are lacking. What is your response to this list? Which items resonate for you based on your experiences? Would you add any life skills to this list? #SmithLearns
Dr. G's philosophy of children differs because in Dr. G's philosophy, you have to understand the lagging skills and how they contribute to the chall. beh. T understand how to discipline correctly when they know the lagging skills and unsolved problems of students. #SmithLearns
4. How is Dr. Greene’s philosophy of children (“Kids do well if they can”) different from the prevailing view (“Kids do well if they want to”)? How do these differing views affect the way adults approach behavioral issues? #smithlearns
