@varnam@royalsaskmuseum Not yet, but we'll be gathering tissue samples for researchers to be able to do this work in the future and hopefully find some answers!
An unexpected find, we didn't believe it until we saw it with our own eyes! This wolf was shot (after killing a bunch of sheep) less than 50km from Regina - their present day range is typically restricted to more northern regions of SK. @royalsaskmuseum https://t.co/1fOKVu0O5t
All museum specimens have a story. The bands on this Cooper's hawk (placed by @jaredclarke5!) tell us she was at least 7 years old when she died, and she never left her home neighbourhood. https://t.co/KJlEWmMfHv
If it's wrong to think a #birdlouse is cute, then I don't want to be right. Strigiphilus sp., I think?? From a #snowyowl#museumprep https://t.co/xmQBdzKNRJ
@birdnirdfoley@jaredclarke5 @GrasslandBio @FisherSpeaks @KiirstiO @Ray_G_Poulin 0% ossified, also probably doesn't make a difference but it's a βοΈ, teeny tiny testes! Thinking we will send some tissue for barcoding so we can solve this mystery once and for all!
@birdnirdfoley@jaredclarke5 @GrasslandBio @FisherSpeaks @KiirstiO @Ray_G_Poulin It died by being struck by a vehicle and had to be pulled out of the grill... πMaybe that explains the wear?
@birdnirdfoley@jaredclarke5 @GrasslandBio @FisherSpeaks @KiirstiO @Ray_G_Poulin From left to right, vesper sparrow and savannah sparrow from collection, then our mystery bird.
@birdnirdfoley@jaredclarke5 @GrasslandBio @FisherSpeaks Interesting! I was thinking immature Savannah Sparrow like @KiirstiO , but @Ray_G_Poulin also thought Vesper at first! I compared to specimens in RSM collections, vespers didn't look as vibrant, no distinct stripe on top of head or dark bars on throat
