I’m at The School District of Philadelphia building this afternoon as the Board of Education votes on whether to approve the superintendent’s plan to shut down 17 schools partly to save money on building maintenance. Follow this thread for updates 🧵

Tensions boiled over toward the end of the meeting as two more board members signaled yes votes. Those in the overflow room chanted “shut it down.”

About a dozen police officers rolled their bikes into the building at around 4:15 p.m. as things started to get rowdy in the meeting. Yells and jeers caused the board to recess for 15 minutes.

A little bit of lighter news today. This car in Philly went viral after it got encased in ice following a nearby water main break. It’s now on Google Maps as a city tourist attraction.
