Last week I had a prolonged telephone talk with the former Attorney-General of Kwara State of Nigeria, Salmond Jawondo, SAN, a brilliant lawyer and friend, about the shocking suspension of a democratically elected Governor of Rivers State in Nigeria. We both agreed that focusing blames on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a misplaced priority. Rather, the blame should focus on the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, whose duty is to advise the President correctly, devoid of bias and sycophantic political jingoism. Blame should also be on members of the National Assembly for the charade they all staged endorsing such an illegality and unconstitutionality.

Thereafter, I had words via telephone with two PDP-controlled Attorneys-General in Nigeria out of four states' Attorneys-General that I actually have maintained some level relationship. Regretfully, two states AGs made themselves unnecessarily inaccessible to me.

Of the two I was able to reach, I told them that I watched with "Great Regret" the disparagement of the rule of law and the principle of democracy and federalism by Nigeria's National Assembly. I made them know that even the members of the parliament have no idea the harm they have caused to themselves, their children, and grandchildren if the illegality is sustained. Because a precedent where a democratically elected president can sit in the comfort of his office to remove or suspend a democratically elected governor and state legislature under a federalist structure has been planted . All that a political gladiator needs to do is cause friction, and the state governor is removed. This is an aberration of a gargantuan proportion.

I told them that no one should focus blames on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu , but on his handlers, especially the Attorney-General of the Federation. The AGF who attempted a lame defense to the media has quite a number of questions on his head to clarify how he interpreted Section 305 of the Constitution to President Bola Tinubu.

I also told them that in a civilized society, members of the parliament who participated in this heineous endorsement of lawlessness ought to face outrage from their constituents.

My final word to them was, if I was in their position and the governor would not allow me to join Rivers State people in filling a suit , I would resign.

Today, one of the Attorneys-General I spoke with has informed me that PDP controlled states, collectively , has filed a suit at the Supreme Court to challenge the illegality and unlawfulness. That's nice to hear.

However, I felt, and still a little disappointed when I asked if Attorney-General of Rivers State or any legal personality group in Rivers State has joined as a party in the suit -- whether as a plaintiff or defendant or , but I had no clear answers. Anyway, I am yet to see the court originating process.

My fear is, with Nigerian judiciary of this era, anything that can give technicality lopeholes such as issues of locus standi, or non-joinder of necessary parties , etc., should be avoided in suits of this matter.

Let me be very clear. No country can function where the rule of law is incessantly disgraced , where the principles of separation of powers is scorned , and where judicial decisions are treated highly disparagingly or where the judiciary surrenders its powers to the other arms of government.

Issues like these and fraud characterization make Nigerian citizens constantly face visa denial from civilized nations, be denigrated and not trusted , and also affect foreign direct investments ( FDIs) as these issues scare away foreign investors .

As we grow in the world market , even as some of us might become holders of status of other countries citizenship , we should realize that Nigeria is our ancestral home and we have a duty to love and protect it.
