If they've played enough, then I'm most likely saying it happened. Yes, characters are smarter than players, but genius level people still screw up.

At best I'd have a DC15 Arcana/Religion/Nature check to "remember" depending on the spell type.

My new favorite thing is to immediately brain dump everything from a session into Mac Whisper. It transcribes it, I fix weird D&D spellings, and push it through ChatGPT/Bard (GPT does a better job at the moment) to tell it to write my session recap.
