A 60-year-old man is in police custody in Broward County, Florida after he was caught on camera Wednesday throwing an elderly German shepherd off the back of a box truck, several feet above the ground, and then abandoning it while it was immobile on the ground. The suspect, Humberto Exposito, was making a delivery to a supermarket when the incident happened.

The Pembroke Police Department says the dog, Nico, was found malnourished with matted hair, and appears to have advanced hip dysplasia.

According to the website of Broward County Animal Care, where Nico was taken for evaluation, he has a placement and is not available for adoption.

Dane County in Wisconsin has finalized an agreement to purchase 165 acres of ancestral land and return it to the Ho-Chunk Nation.

During the 1800s, a series of forced treaties and violent military removals stripped the Ho-Chunk people of their lands in this region.

The land is valued at nearly $6.5 million and includes 6 archaeological sites and 22 ancient burial mounds.

This is a big deal because it's a transfer of land back to Indigenous people, which is what they've been demanding for centuries. All the symbolic gestures in the world are no substitute for the direct return of land with ancestral, cultural, and burial significance to Indigenous people.

Do wild elephants who have been treated by us remember us?

Sometimes, yes. 'Dad' is a wild bull who turned up just after we established our Ithumba Unit. He's actually the father of two wild-born babies! In 2015, after a yearlong absence, Dad returned to Ithumba in the company of two friends. The Keepers soon realised that all three were sporting septic wounds from poisoned arrows.

Dad knew that, if they returned to the stockades, they would receive the help and treatment they so desperately needed — and he made the decision to bring his friends there, even after being harmed at the hands of humans. Because of Dad’s faith in us, we were able to treat all three bulls and they made a full recovery.

Dad continues to stop by, as does Lazarus, another bull treated by our teams. Years ago, our SWT/KWS Vet Unit saved his life after he was snared. Watch the moment Benjamin reunited with him - he doesn't forget a face and neither, apparently, does Lazarus!
