When Justice Eludes Citizens.

Today, after the presiding Judge adjourned the matter I was covering, I walked to a lunch spot.

In the corridors of the criminal division of the High Court, I found this lady taking a nap in-front of a courtroom that’s sitting as the International Crimes Division. The Court is trying the people accused of the murder of Joan Kagezi.

The session was slated for 2 pm.

But this lady was convinced that her son who has been on remand for more than three years was gonna be brought to that courtroom and she’d have a chance to see him.

Trouble is: the son was jailed after being caught in a sweep of people who were near a mob justice scene in Gayaza.

He’s not appearing anywhere near that court but she lay down in the hope that when the clock strikes 2 pm, he will be there.

To wave at her.

To beg the state for his freedom.

She has no idea about his representation. Neither does he.

She just says he had gone out to buy some home things and ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

My heart is broken for her, for her child, for people like her child.

They have filled up the jail cells and continue to do so for years.

We are talking 4 times capacity and then some.

We need to #EmptyTheJails
We need #DPPReforms
