.@BarackObama: "When I was president, I suppose I could have simply unilaterally ordered the military to go into some red state and harass and intimidate a governor there or cut off funding for states that didn't vote for me... but that is contrary to how I think our democracy is supposed to work."
There are no easy answers. Some of the problems we’re seeing have played out over decades, and reversing them is going to take time as well. But we are seeing successful efforts by young leaders around this country and around the world to reinvigorate pluralist values.
And what those leaders are discovering is that, when they listen to people and recognize their multiple identities and seek out common experiences and common values – they’re not just strengthening democratic habits. They’re also building stronger organizations and delivering better results for their members.
That’s the power of pluralism. That’s how we’ll reduce the cynicism that is so prevalent in our politics right now. And ultimately, that’s how we’ll work together to solve the greatest challenges of our time.
I’m convinced if we want democracy as we understand it to survive, then we’re all going to have to work towards a renewed commitment to pluralism. The alternative is what we’ve seen here in the U.S. and in many democracies around the world – not just gridlock and public cynicism, but an increasing willingness on the part of politicians and their followers to violate democratic norms, use the power of the state to target critics, journalists or political rivals and even resort to violence in order to gain and hold on to power.
At this year’s @ObamaFoundation Democracy Forum, I spoke about pluralism – the idea that in a democracy, we all have to find a way to live alongside individuals and groups who are different from us. So we commit to a system of rules that helps us peacefully resolve our disputes and try to cultivate habits that encourage us to not only tolerate each other but also join in collective action.
It took several days to count every ballot in 2020, and it’s very likely we won’t know the outcome tonight either. So please keep a few things in mind as you make your voice heard today:
– Thousands of election workers around the country are working hard today. Respect them. Thank them.
– Don’t share things before checking your sources.
– Let the process run its course. It takes time to count every ballot.
That's the sound of a Chopin waltz that was unearthed after nearly 200 years. Here's the story of how an unknown work in the composer’s hand was discovered in a New York museum, the first such find in more than half a century. https://t.co/RXb1FfJOmL
