Maybe the most American thing is the reflexive need to believe that even their worst crimes must somehow contain a hidden virtue.

They cannot just invade.
They must "liberate."

They cannot just starve.
They must "pressure."

They cannot just overthrow.
They must "stabilize."

They cannot just lie.
They must "lead."

That is why arguing with them feels like arguing with a church that baptizes every missile on the way out of the factory.

You are not fighting facts.
You are fighting liturgy.

Given the way the Russian political system is structured, there are basically only three things that would stop Putin being Russian president in January 2030 (his current terms ends in May of that year).

The last time Britain, an island nation surrounded by allies, was invaded was 1797, when a small French force landed in Wales.

Britain, meanwhile, has sent troops into Russian territory twice (during the Crimean War in the 1850s, and during the Russian Civil War after 1918).

Russia has never invaded Britain and to mount a serious conventional attack today, it would first have to cross Poland, Germay and France or somehow project force across seas controlled by NATO.

On the evidence of recent years, that seems rather unlikely.
