Driving home, 2011. Checkpoint. Drunk policeman.

3 gun shots, one bullet punched through my car boot into my right hand.

That hand once edit, animated, paid bills and fed my family. Overnight it became dead weight.

Career gone. Marriage cracked. Mind still bleeding daily.I sued the Nigeria Police.

2015: Federal High Court ordered them to fund reconstructive surgery to restore my life.

Eleven years later: zero naira, zero apology, zero accountability.

I still can’t fully use the hand they destroyed. Still begging strangers so I don’t lose it forever.

Back in 2016, I was scouted by Droom soccer Academy during their trials in Enugu. They asked me to come to their camp in Lagos. The problem was, I had no one to stay with on the mainland, and I had a job in Enugu(My Uncle's shop) that was bringing me some income. So every Sunday, I would travel to Onitsha, then take a night bus to Lagos, arrive on Monday morning, and head straight to training.

We trained from Monday to Thursday. As soon as training ended on Thursday, I would rush back to CMS and board another night bus to Onitsha. I followed this routine for months because we were told we had a chance of going abroad to play football. We believed in the opportunity.

Then one day at training, I noticed cameras placed all around the pitch. Coaches were setting up drills, and it looked like something serious was about to happen. We lined up and started doing shooting and passing drills, but strangely, the camera crew wasn’t recording anything. That was until a certain boy arrived with his father.

From that moment, everything changed. We were split into two teams, and all the best players were placed in one team with that boy as our striker and they even made him captain. We were told to play in a way that would make him look good give him the ball, help him finish chances. He took all the free kicks, all the corners. Basically, the whole team was set up to help him shine.

Our coach told us to cooperate because the boy’s father promised to pay for our flight tickets to Spain for trials. A few days later, during training, one of the players showed us the clips from that day and what I saw shocked me. They had edited the video to make it look like the boy was the star. All the passes and good plays from the rest of us were cut out. It was clear they used 21 of us to promote one boy, just because his father had money.

That day, I made a promise to myself: my children will enjoy life. I don’t hate Nepo babies let them enjoy what they have. But the truth is, the child of a rich man will never understand that the gardener doesn’t like being dirty…. he just has no choice.

I can think of different ways this is going to end badly for everyone involved because it is of course Nigeria. All you need is one road side economist a la Olumide Adeshina to blame the onchain implementation for market downturn and the devs will get thrown in jail for market manipulation and unauthorized stock offering.
