Well, it's been a few years since I have posted here... I want to introduce Systems. Change. Educators. Unite. a community for those working in systems understanding, change/innovation, or any educators interested in either or both areas to UNITE https://t.co/9EaZZrv3nR
Congratulations to the @UCT_news & @BerthaCentre team for winning this year's Map the System competition. High-fives to everyone who participated and learned along the way! @mapthesystem
@sunil_suri I got it partially wrong I think. The most important part is the next question which is "And how is YOUR work going to further THEIR impact." I think systems-led leaders design their work to improve the outcomes of OTHER nodes in the system. Thanks for reaching out!
@GregoryMarksNY Thanks for checking in @GregoryMarksNY. Ugh - it's more than just our gun laws that are broken. Our biases, bullying, turning a blind eye to hate are a part of it. Oh so much is broken. But indeed, allowing civilian assault weapons is the icing on the insanity.
Episode 4 is out. Thanks to @danielapapi & @TongueFuShow for your gift of being our guests. Thanks for all you do within your work to create #SocialChange. This episode is a goodie!

@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli I lied. One last thing: some colleagues & I wrote this piece on systems change education & what is missing to shift the "solution-focused" accelerator type education model towards systems change education in case useful https://t.co/XOzGFpSMVj (need to explicitly teach systems)
@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli journalism-where they fill an impact gap by sharing knowledge where it's missing or entrepreneurial academic (not necessarily an oxymoron) intentionally filling a research gap to improve outcomes of practitioners. Sorry for long series of replies! Hopefully a bit of use in there!
@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli "success" becomes participants finding a path to impact - if that is a next job or internship with an org they think is doing great work in the sector, changing/contributing from within existing efforts, or launching something new which need not be a "venture" - could be activist
@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli WAY more students joined in. The ones who knew they didn't want to be "a founder", the ones who knew the problems were really complex and didn't want to pitch an idea without first learning more, the ones who just wanted to learn more about systems or a certain issue. In that way
@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli We started @mapthesystem the create a competition which countered the typical business plan comp where you had to pitch "your solution" and instead invited participants to pitch "their understanding of the problem, landscape of current solution, and the impact gaps" & as a result
@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli systems-led leadership skills (understanding a system, analyzing what has already beed tried, considering power dynamics, personal reflection, & taking action designed to contribute to impact of OTHER nodes in the system - thereby shifting the systems results even after finished)
@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli the key skills which are missing: understanding complexity/systems, an understanding that no one intervention will "solve" a complex problem, "contributing" vs "winning" mindsets, the value of lived experience (like Baljeet's work talks about https://t.co/TDvDLJFISN), and...
@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli And the really smart students who also understood complexity being left out of the picture, because they couldn't pitch a 5 min "how my idea who 'win' over your idea and scale to solve the problem" type pitch as they realized it was more complicated than that. We need to teach...
@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli I understand jumping into "solving" (that is my tendency by nature) but having taught social entrepreneurship for a number of years I saw so many examples of poor ideas being funded, foreigners being overfunded while local ideas were overlooked simply because of PPT skills/lang..
@LallSaurabh@SamerAbdelnour@nalanpog@jcmarqz@HarveyKoh@ndidiNwuneli That is why I had written this report and SSIR piece on "Tackling Heropreneurship" https://t.co/C0zVVhYOtE years ago and then helped launch a global challenge (now called Map the System) at Oxford designed to incentivize problem understanding https://t.co/u1D6Xjzrw3 @mapthesystem
