Happy to share our family has moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where I will be teaching creative writing at Argentine Middle School. Looking forward to many collaborations in the diverse and vibrant community of #KCK, and greetings to all our friends in Costa Rica and South Texas!
Tomorrow is the world premiere of Ursula, a play for young people about the experience of child migrants from Central America. Afterwards I´m participating in a panel discussion. Here´s the link to register if anyone is interested: https://t.co/bejr69tE7m
The school is hiring for English, Social Studies, Spanish, and Science, as well as for a Head of School. If anyone out there is interested, I'm happy to tell you more or answer questions. It's an amazing experience.
For the past two years, I've been teaching at the Monteverde Friends School, a wonderful bilingual Quaker school in the cloud forest. As our family prepares to return to the U.S., our school is hiring new teachers: https://t.co/tDtfelo8ML
For 122 years, Laredo has been celebrating George Washington's birthday with a massive display of patriotism, though Washington had no connection to the city. With the backdrop of Trump's wall, this year's party was... weird. @danielbluetyx explains: https://t.co/gxwnD51XAj
One year ago today @TXCivilRights first interviewed separated families in #McAllen. Today, a father was separated from his 10-month old daughter, and a judge heard arguments on a 4-yr old sent to Michigan alone. The crisis continues #EndZeroTolerance#FBT
I'm pleased to share that @yesmagazine is running an excerpt from my book Angry Tias from @StrongArm_Press, about my initial reporting on family separation: https://t.co/3anHvmuCSL.
These are @AngryTiasRGV recently honored as RFK Human Rights Laureates. The Tias continue to provide information and humanitarian aid to migrants left at bus stations or trapped on the bridges or dangerous parts of Mexico due to the "Stay in Mexico" policy.
TIreless is an understatement. I had the privilege to interview and follow many of the Tias, an experience I wrote about in my book Angry Tias: Cruelty and Compassion on the U.S.-Mexico Border: https://t.co/O33pEJeqkF. This award is incredibly well-deserved.
The award citation commends the Tias for "their tireless work to secure dignity, safety, and community for those seeking that very same opportunity and freedoms we all so frequently take for granted.”
@StrongArm_Press is donating 50 percent of proceeds from sales of the book to organizations providing humanitarian relief and legal aid to asylum seekers on the border.
My book Angry Tias: Cruelty and Compassion on the U.S.-Mexico Border is out from @StrongArm_Press: https://t.co/O33pEJeqkF. It chronicles how fed-up border women and under-resourced lawyers teamed up to resist family separation in the Rio Grande Valley in the summer of 2018.
The book also highlights the work of groups like @TXCivilRights and @ACLUTx that documented cases of family separation even when the government failed to keep adequate records, and @CCharitiesRGV and @LPPShelter which provide needed shelter, counseling, and other vital services.
I spent Valentine's Day reporting in Matamoros, where wildcat strikes have transformed into a movement tens of thousands strong. Its surprising success is inspiring action across Mexico, but will it last? My story: https://t.co/tEN7FgTOcH
