I started the Mixed Reality Arthacks as Interventions 10 years ago, at Frieze NY 2016, and have been doing them steadily since at major art fairs and contemporary art exhibitions every year by visually hacking my digital art into found and shot exhibition footage mostly on Instagram. Back in 2016, I said it was to define form for digital art, radicalize curation, and democratize the exhibition space. Ten years later, its pretty much a standard approach to content on most social feeds.
I'm not sure how much longer I will be doing them, I like the work that emerges out of the frenzied 3-4 day, round-the-clock sessions it takes for me to do them, but those same sessions are getting harder for me to maintain, physically. When I started the Arthacks, after 50 years, digital art had very little visibility in the contemporary art world, it didn't even have the seat at the table that performance art and video art had. Now, there is a seat, mostly for AI. The world changes fast.
