An exceptional piece by @Will___lloyd in the NS that cuts through the politics of Makerfield and speaks to just how grim, and quietly, seethingly furious the mood is turning in Makerfield and much of England.
"There was a white rage in the air and one by-election wasn’t going to change that. Too much had gone wrong for too long. I kept thinking about Naipaul’s line, the slums of Bombay, the slums of Platt Bridge. People didn’t have much, nor did they expect much. Around Makerfield, those I spoke to were cynical about everything except themselves, their hot feelings of rage and dejection."

The Isle of Man’s Tourist Trophy (TT) is the most dangerous motor competition in the world. It has killed more than 270 of its competitors and crippled many more; since the birth of the TT, only two years have gone without fatalities.
Formula 1 drivers race upon purpose-built circuits, places provided with run off zones, safety barriers, and specialised road surfaces; the TT has none of these.
Reaching top speeds of more than 200 mph, competitors hurtle through country roads, villages, towns, and up a mountain.

Sam Mendes could have made a better Beatles film about Nichol. Member of the group for 10 days at the height of Beatlemania, plays eight concerts with John, Paul and George. Thinks he will be famous, goes bankrupt a year later. Now an obscure local celebrity in Kentish Town.
