If N.C. State loses to UNC tomorrow in the ACC tournament final, the Wolfpack would be just the third Power 6 team in the last 10 years to make their conf. tourney final but MISS the NCAAT, joining '22 Texas A&M and '18 Southern California.

UNC will play FSU in the ACC quarterfinals at noon tomorrow. All three of UNC's last national title teams ('05, '09, '17) lost in the ACC semis.

For top-seed locks, is there an incentive to throw their conference tourneys for one more day of rest?

I tracked the performance of every P6, top-4 seed since 2013 and how well they did in their conference tournaments. Here's what I found.

First round: 19 teams in the dataset were upset in the round of 64. 12 of those losers made their conference championship.
Second round: 36 teams lost in the round of 32; 21 of them were non-finalists.
Sweet 16: 37 teams lost in their regional semifinal, and 22 were finalists.
