@SethAMandel It’s also tragic, and tragically common nowadays. She fills a void with poison she doesn’t understand to grasp for meaning and purpose, and to acquire status. And by so doing she inflicts collateral damage. She might be an icon of the descent into decadence of our culture.
@noam_dworman Of course Israel can sustain and continue to flourish l; because it has no choice but to do so unless and until the Palestinians decide they don’t want a communal life animated by blind hatred and poverty.
@TomerPersico A difficult question is the order of causality. Does a biased and demonstrably false narrative lead people to conclude Israel is evil? Or does the conviction that Jews are evil (arising from other causes) lead to an unquestioning condemnation of Israel? I fear it is the latter.
@Martin_Kramer@ElliotKaufman6@FalkOphir@WSJopinion I think it has. An Iranian ring of fire, with a nuclear weapons program defended by an array of hypersonic missiles designed to deter entry by the US navy was a tangible possibility on Oct 7, 2023. It is no longer so. That compares to any past Israeli military accomplishment.
@jpodhoretz Evidently, Ms. Nessel does not judge her fellow Jewish congregants to be the coward she has turned out to be. She is literally welcome nowhere.
@jpodhoretz She won’t gain the whole world, because she’s a Jew, which makes her useful but ultimately despised by the voters she is appealing to. She will just lose her soul.
@Eyalo365 Here is what is most frightening:grant them, arguendo, every transgression they accuse the Jews of-colonialism, oppression of others, cruelty.Israel is not alone in receiving those accusations. But Israel, and Jews, stand apart in the degree&centrality of hatred in western societies
@continetti@WSJopinion Her union, by blocking school choice and enforcing closures in 2020/1 is the single most important obstacle to enabling upward mobility from poverty in America. Shame on her and shame on her union.
@thetweetbeat365@yudapearl 1. Its not clear Israel is stronger than it enemies. If Hezbollah, Iran&PA security forces had coordinated with Hamas on 10/7 its very possible that Israel would not exist today. Those enemies remain&Turkey has entered the fray.2.when Palestinians seek peace they shall have peace
@Doranimated The questions Mandami’s definition raises are, who decides what goods and services constitutes a good life?are they the same for everyone? and by what means and from whom are those items obtained? Nobody has figured out how to deliver on these w/o (or with) authoritarian control.
@zriboua Joseph Campbell argues that MM is a modern rendition of the hero’s journey of mythology &that Hans Castorp’s 7 years in the sanatorium is a metaphor for his ascent through the sevrn chakras. The loss of a sense of the temporal passage of time reflects the exit from the commonplace
@Doranimated@zriboua In addition, it is entirely up to the Palestinians whether they will have a state. The day they accept Israel as a Jewish state is the day the conflict ceases to be existential and compromises can be negotiated.
@aarondmiller2 The US goals in Iran are limited to military (& now transport) objectives& do not include direct intervention in the state. The US goal in Vietnam was to prevent a change in regime in the south. Not an apples to apples comparison.
@TomerPersico I don’t think statements by Israeli politicians are dispositive of the prospects for a Palestinian state. The crucial factor is Palestinian acceptance of Israel as a Jewish state. The day that happens is the day the dispute ceases to be existential & can be resolved by compromise.
@Eyalo365 Put it this way.Western societies are uniquely open to newcomers, but require (if to perpetuate itself)something of them:That the immigrant embrace its core values, including its culture, language& legal traditions.France emphasizes the former two.The US emphasizes the latter two.
@PhilGordonDC In considering sanctions to deter activities that hinder reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis in Judea and Sameria, what about banning imports from areas governed by the PA so long as it continues its use of funds to subsidize families of people who murder Jews?
