"...their repatriation is an expression of sovereignty... it marked the re-wilding of a landscape that’s been missing a central player for far too long... it signaled the beginning of a renaissance, a reconciliation and a restoration, all on the back of the buffalo."
Join us at the National Discovery Center in Lewistown on Tuesday, May 23rd, for our second Prairie Lecture! Our very own wildlife ecologist Daniel Kinka, Ph.D. (@DanielKinka), will present “Endangered, Absent, Irrelevant,” and be available after the talk for Q & A.
Today we celebrate World Rewilding Day! Learn more about rewilding and restoration projects underway right now all over the world, and watch messages of #RewildingHope from several partner organizations (like this one from our @DanielKinka!) online at: https://t.co/Bry5rt4qUO
@Courtney_SaysHi@MustelidDwyer @JohnMurtaugh2 Totally agree that large-scale movements are critical for bison as ecosystem engineers. But, for the record, a 42” tall, wildlife friendly fence with an electric second wire keeps bison inside a pasture just fine. https://t.co/oAe1qk3lgq
@DrJulieKYoung @JohnMurtaugh2 Very, very deliberate and progressive cattle management can come pretty close to mimicking the ecological engineering role bison provide for free, but you can’t get to 100%. I’m particularly interested in the ecological effects of wallowing (which cows don’t do).
@skeldred Hard to say. I'm not part of the conversation or an expert, but I am interested to see how the review process considers this recent study, and whether or not it challenges the grey language regarding "hybrids" in the ESA.

Some locals don’t like this one bit and have lobbied to outlaw nonprofit land buys under the banner Save The Cowboys.
But Lance Johnson (who lost most of his hand in a lightning strike as a boy and never missed a beat) says the nature lovers saved his herd.
And in the middle of all this, the woman leading @AmericanPrairie is trying to stitch together a massive reserve by raising enough $ to buy up ranches, tear down fences and let the buffalo roam.
Excellent context and coverage of the insanely complicated politics of managing public elk on private lands in Montana by @BrettBFrench. More of this please!
