Kamala's speech last night, judged by an objective standard, was an insult to the intelligence of any informed person. Written for a 4th-grade level of reading, the text itself was preposterous propaganda, contradicted four years of reality, and was nothing more than a brazen display of manipulative blather, backed by triangulating symbols designed to confound the opposition. Strangely, however, it is not on that basis it is being judged. People watch such displays not with their own brains engaged but at a meta level, as an attempt to judge how other people might regard the same display. The judgement very much depends on how high or low a regard he or she has for the intelligence of the common person. This sets up a grave irony. The stupider the critic believes others (voters or just viewers) to be, the more he is inclined to regard it as a success. If we really do live in idiocracy, this speech was darn-near perfect. If, however, the critic believes there is still some functioning brain synapses firing in the public mind, he is likely to regard it as a big fail. The deep level of cynicism seems to dominate all political judgement and coverage today. We've stopped even looking for rationality, truth, good sense, and honesty, and take it as a given that we are being presented with nothing but a show and invited to judge it as such. Everyone seems to be trying out for a part in the great drama or already hired and evaluated as one would rank actors on a stage. It's the ultimate reductio ad absurdum into which modern politics has descended. The one rule is: no truth allowed because telling it would mean political death.
