In an Istanbul mosque, this elder asked where I'm from.
I respond "Iran" and he began speaking to me in Persian.
Turns out he is from a micro-minority of Kazakh Iranians (he says they are just a few thousand).
He grew up in a village near Gorgan, then, his family went to Istanbul, then Damascus, then Amman, where he lived for decades, finally returning to Turkey.
We spoke in Persian and Arabic. I was surprised he knew Persian, given he left Iran as a child and he speaks Kazakh at home, but he mentioned that his family maintains ties to Iran and visits.
Istanbul is an incredible place.

This is brilliant from Jude Bellingham, by the way. Had a winning goal ruled out. Sent off afterwards. Still found time to stop and take photos with every kid who asked for one on the way out of Mestalla. Class.

For young Indonesians who never experienced Soeharto, here’s a little story: one day when I was in high school and Soeharto was in power, I had a pack of cigarettes and a book on Marxism in my school bag. All were banned. The book was more than banned: it was, and is, illegal.
Just one sector but most migrant security guards work 12-18 hrs/day everyday with no leave. If they’re lucky, they may get 1-2 days off a month but many don’t. This may be the only break they got from guarding yr malls, parking lots, condos etc the whole year. Leave them alone
