Tuesday’s decisive victory meant that our elected leaders have a community mandate to dramatically improve the material conditions of people’s lives, to fight for a State College where we can all be welcome & cared for as ourselves, beautiful & bold.
People power. Power forward.
“We outworked our competition, point blank,” said (Jenna) Henry. // That’s no joke. Still can’t get over it! Won’t be shocked to potentially see some familiar names on the General ballot once Republican write-in votes are counted. The slate will beat em again!
‘Political earthquake’: How progressive Dems @EzraNanes, @gopalbala75, @B_Divine97 and @richbiev surprised many with State College council, mayor races https://t.co/Jli6Vep7Dh
So great that one of Pennsylvania’s most dynamic communities now has a mayor that matches its dynamism.
Congratulations to @EzraNanes who’s going to be a true leader in Centre County and in one of Pennsylvania’s most vital communities.

Good Morning, State College! Early reporting out of Precinct 19: @EzraNanes @lauracshadle @richbiev @gopalbala75 & @b_divine97 off to a commanding lead!
“My job as mayor is to represent all of the citizens.” Unpopular opinion, perhaps, but no… it’s not. As an ethical and moral human, Ron, you possess capacity to distinguish btwn right/wrong, just/unjust. You’re making the CHOICE to represent a particular voice. That’s on you.
Y’all. I cannot. This man is exhausting. He didn’t imply it. He said it. Most fascinating to me… he did so while actually making the argument in favor of justice/equity. We CANNOT reward Ron Filippelli for his failure to lead on racial justice/healing w/a vote on Council.
Some community members and political candidates accused him of implying a potential borough board should be whiter to better reflect the area’s makeup.

“[The Police] should have confidence that the decisions and recommendations made by the committee are fair and evidence-based. If they do not, the community will suffer.” 🤦🏻♂️ Do the members of the community not deserve the same in return? The community is suffering, Ron.
Lastly, to be clear, a community cannot be a good place to live for LGBTQ+ people when a commitment by it’s elected leaders to racial justice remains an open question. Or worse… there’s public record of overt hostility to that aim. We deserve better.
The “Experienced Leadership” GOTV mailer delivered today boasts of @State_CollegePA’s “100% rating as a good place to live for LGBTQ citizens.” There’s lots to unpack in the “Keep [State College] Great” adjacent postcard, but this is the point with which I take greatest issue.
.@State_CollegePA can be an incredibly challenging place to live as an LGBTQ+ person. It can also be beautiful. The credit for that beauty, though, goes to the relentlessly committed non-profit agencies, community activists, affirming faith leaders, and our families of choice.
I have deep appreciation for Councilperson Yeaple’s willingness to answer the call to serve. However, Yeaple has made no effort to earn my vote. And, when it mattered (budget), chose status quo over community. The endorsement of Dauler & Fillipelli confirms it’s a no for me.
Transformational change is about budgets, reform, accountability & healing. Absolutely. It’s also about understanding the issues of today. It’s anticipating the challenges of tmrw. Its seeing beyond one’s own needs. It’s about building a pipeline of volunteer community leaders!
We need leaders in @State_CollegePA willing to hustle. Only 3 on the ballot on Tues. (5/18) check that box: Rich Bieber, Divine Lipscomb & Gopal Balachandran. It’s about now AND the future. Their voices along w/ @Behring4Borough & Jesse Barlow could mean transformational change!
