Maybe it was the horrid reviews and low expectations, but I didn’t hate #KlaraAndTheSun. It’s a mixed bag and there’s one particular scene that REALLY kills any good faith, but Jenna Ortega absolutely shines and keeps it afloat. Occasionally whimsical and tremendously sad.

Last night, I screened Klara and the Sun, Taika Waititi's adaptation of a novel by one of my favorite authors, Kazuo Ishiguro.

Jenna Ortega is terrific in the lead role, and Amy Adams is excellent as well. As expected from Ishiguro, the film explores some profound themes, including brokenness, prayer, sacrifice, and the nature of love.

Unfortunately, Waititi's quirky style overwhelms much of the beauty of the story, while the weak script and awkward dialogue undermine its emotional impact. There's a really good movie in here somewhere. Sigh.
