This past week, estimates for the global population have finally reached over 8 billion.

With this type of rapid population growth, concerns about resource availability arise.

Can our Earth support the 8 billion that depend on it? Can we handle more growth?

The first step of equitable redistribution of resources would be for developed countries to stop encouraging overconsumption. In the USA, consumerism is the perpetuator of our economic system, and without serious reform, overconsumption will kill us.

With this in consideration, and with proper resource management and equitable allocation we should not have issues with providing for our rapidly growing population.

@KateHallman121 VOCs are released when growing, so it is expected to see this issue with hemp production. The majority of VOCs are released by the solvents used during the THC extraction process.

The cultivation of cannabis poses a threat to the environment.

Both legal and illegal cultivation is associated with several detrimental impacts on the environment.

Will legalization lessen these impacts, or is environmental degradation implicit in cannabis cultivation?

@DougFreda It’s actually the terpenes that are VOCs, which are the compounds that give cannabis it’s smell.

While it is clear that some of these impacts are not avoidable in cannabis production, the legalization of cannabis will lessen these impacts drastically. With regulations on pesticide usage through federal legalization, this industry will become more sustainable.

Air quality

Both the growth and manufacturing of cannabis create air quality impacts.

During processing, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released into the air. VOCs are responsible for creating smog and have various human health risks associated, including emphysema.
