L’Italia fu, nel 1949, tra i dieci Stati fondatori del Consiglio d’Europa, nato nel dopoguerra per difendere la democrazia, i diritti umani e lo Stato di diritto. Eppure oggi quello spirito originario sembra smarrito, sostituito da dichiarazioni sempre più faziose e lontane dalla realtà.

Al termine della telefonata tra il Presidente Trump e il Presidente Putin ho avuto una nuova conversazione telefonica insieme al Presidente francese, Emmanuel Macron, al Cancelliere tedesco, Friedrich Merz, al Presidente finlandese, Alexander Stubb, alla Presidente della Commissione Europea, Ursula von der Leyen e al Presidente ucraino, Volodymyr Zelensky, con il Presidente degli Stati Uniti.

Si lavora per un immediato avvio dei negoziati tra le parti che possano condurre il prima possibile a un cessate il fuoco e costruire le condizioni per una pace giusta e duratura in Ucraina.

Al riguardo, è stata considerata positivamente la disponibilità del Santo Padre ad ospitare i colloqui presso il Vaticano. L’Italia è pronta a fare la sua parte per facilitare i contatti e lavorare per la pace.
