THE SURVIVAL OF NANS IS A PRIORITY

As President of NANS, the survival, sustainability and independence of this organization remain a priority for me.

When you hear me speak about DUES, it is actually not because of NANS National. Whether dues come in or not, NANS National will always find a way to function.

My concern is the sustainability of the entire structure of the organization.

NANS has 37 JCC Chairmen, including the FCT, and 6 Zonal Coordinators. These are supposed to be the first point of call for students at the grassroots. Unfortunately, many of them are almost incapacitated. They struggle to represent you because they lack the resources and support required to move around, engage authorities and respond to students’ challenges.

Many depend on support from their respective state governments. But let me tell you the truth: about 90% of state governments do not prioritize supporting student leadership. And honestly, how do you empower someone who is expected to hold you accountable?

Every NANS executive is human before becoming an executive. If we genuinely want an independent, vibrant and effective NANS, its members must also be empowered and financially capable of standing on their own.

We are committed to better representation. We want to remain by your side and fight for you whenever your rights are threatened. But for this to work sustainably, every member must also play their part.

As crazy as you may think NANS is, the truth is that the name still sends shivers down the minds of oppressive school managements.

Students call on NANS for issues as small as:

• Election rigging in their institutions
• Arbitrary fee increments
• Departmental extortion
• Lecturers’ intimidation
• Examination irregularities
• Course registration deadlines
• Unfair academic policies
• And many other challenges.

Sometimes, I personally spend close to ₦500,000 to push statements and issues concerning students and institutions through the media.

The reforms we are proposing may not necessarily benefit this current administration. That is not the point.

The point is to reset NANS properly.

We must build an organization that will survive beyond individuals, administrations and personalities.

NANS must be independent.
NANS must be sustainable.
NANS must be vibrant.
NANS must remain the voice of the Nigerian student.

Let us all play our part in building the NANS we want to see.

The reform must continue.
The reset must happen.
The organization must survive. 🇳🇬❤️
