On this day in 1995, the Grateful Dead wrapped up a two-night stand at The Pyramid in Memphis, TN, right along the banks of the Mississippi. The Dead celebrated night one with the first-ever performance of legend Al Green's "Take Me To The River.” Night two brought the final performance of "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," closing out the song's run for good, before the Dead sent everyone home with "Unbroken Chain" as the encore. What used to be the final resting place of “Memphis Blues” now stands as the Pyramid Bass Pro Shop. Ever make the pilgrimage?

"It allows us to play super-loud without killing ourselves or frying those in the front, to get loud, clean sound at the back of a huge hall and supreme musical control…for me, it's like piloting a flying saucer. Or riding your own sound wave." - Phil Lesh
52 years ago today, the Grateful Dead conducted their “sound check” with the Wall of Sound at Cow Palace in Daly City. The system that would revolutionize the way music was heard came at quite the cost, powered by 480 speakers stacked about 30 feet high and operated by eight soundmen, costing roughly $200,000. The results however, stand the test of time. Listen to tracks from the show on ‘Dick’s Picks Volume 24’ here: https://t.co/UclXCrOskV

Remembering Ron “Pigpen” McKernan on his birthday today.🌹
Jerry first crossed paths with Pigpen in the early ’60s on the San Mateo coffeehouse circuit. Before long they were making noise together in The Zodiacs (Jerry on bass, Pig on harp) and from there, Mother McCree’s, The Warlocks, and finally the @GratefulDead. Spin some Pigpen today and tell us what you’re listening to below.

This is one of my favorite things ever. I love the idea that Dark Star is just the ever-present harmonic vibration of existence, and that we tune in & out of it as we experience life.
Charles Reich, your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
“Brent’s passing came at a time where we were experiencing enormous show attendances and Brent was at his best. With ‘In the Dark,’ we had to start defending the shows. People were breaking in. It was 50,000 people inside, 50,000 outside…Brent was really cranking, and we were bringing a lot of the old stuff out – ‘Death Don’t Have No Mercy,’ ‘Attics of My Life.’ There was no pressure to reinvent. We were just being the Grateful Dead. And Jerry was feeling good. On this day in 1990, we lost Brent Mydland and remember him for what he became: forever a member of the Grateful Dead.” - Mickey Hart Remembering Brent Mydland on the anniversary of his passing today 🌹

30 years ago today 7/9/95, @gratefuldead played their final show at Soldier Field in Chicago. As the story goes, the last thing Jerry said to Bobby as they left the stage was “Always a hoot”. Were you there?
On Sunday I traveled to the middle of the desert to capture this: The ISS against our sun. What I didn't expect: the sun producing a magnificent flare at the same time
