All of these things ruined poker...
- Solvers
- GTO robotic kids
- Re-entries
- Coaches
- Cell phones
- Greedy live tours
- Incompetent online poker sites
At least that's what you'll hear.
But if these are the things you believe are holding you back, you might just be stuck in the past.
Here's something that's true far beyond poker:
Technology changes, social norms change, business models change, and the way people make money changes with them.
Whenever something becomes easy, comfortable, low-variance money, other people eventually figure it out too. They jump in, copy what works, and compete for the same opportunity.
Eventually the edge gets smaller, or disappears altogether. This isn't unique to poker.
It happens with credit card points. Email marketing. App Store growth hacks. Crypto. SEO. E-commerce. Investing. You name it.
Edges get discovered, exploited, and disappear. Then new ones emerge.
You can spend your time complaining that the old game changed and who's to blame, or you can start looking for where the new opportunities are.
Poker is a perfect example. When making a living purely as a poker pro got much tougher, some players kept trying to recreate the glory days.
Others adapted by doing things like:
- Changing game formats
- Switching between online and live poker
- Moving to where the best games were
- Investing more seriously in coaching/study
- Adding solvers and modern study methods to a game previously built on feel and experience
- Organizing their own games and finding new ways to bring value to players
Some were early to content, streaming and YouTube. At the time, they were putting in hundreds or thousands of hours with little to no immediate payoff.
Years later, some of those bets look obvious. But they weren't obvious at the time. If they were, everyone would have been doing them.
And that's really the point. The best opportunities usually don't look obvious until after the edge has already been diluted.
Every 5-10 years, you should be willing to question whether the things that got you where you are are still the things that will get you where you want to go.
What's changing? Which of my old edges are disappearing? Where are new edges being created? What am I resisting simply because the old way is more comfortable? And which of today's trends will actually last?
Reinventing yourself isn't a sign that what you did before failed. It's often what's necessary to survive and sustain success. And frankly, it makes life a hell of a lot more interesting.
The poker dream didn't die. The path to it evolved.
And it'll change again.
Adapt or Die.
