Danny Ventura was everything anyone could want in a boss, mentor, and friend.

He jumpstarted the career of hundreds on the high school sports desk at the Boston Herald including my own.

His joy was contagious and humor infectious. His stories were classics and impact immeasurable. Thank you for all the memories, DV. You will be missed.

Nobody was ever beloved by the people he covered more than Danny. It was absolutely incredible. Never once big-timed anyone too. Already miss his razor-sharp humor. RIP, paisan.

This is devastating news. Danny was a pioneer in the High School Sports industry here in New England. He changed the lives of so many for the better, be it as a journalist, editor or during his days as a local coach.

Ventura gave me my start with the Boston Herald in 2014. I had just completed an internship with the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton and graduated from UMass. I was in search of my first real job in the journalistic industry, and sent some of my past articles out with the hopes of receiving an email. Danny called me directly in August of that summer, and told me to come to the Herald for an interview in the Seaport. He hired me days later. From that moment on, he became a mentor to myself, and he did the very same for so many other local writers just hoping to break into the industry.

I will never forget the lessons he taught, nor will anyone else. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time.

With an extremely heavy heart, I pass along that Donato "Danny V" Ventura passed away last night after a 7 month battle with cancer. He was a great journalist (best in Boston School Sports history), a fantastic guy, the best husband and a great friend to so many of us. So sad🙏

Danny was a fantastic mentor and friend, and he established a tremendous standard in this industry. Nobody better in HS sports. His legacy is as strong as anyone’s.
