What if single-payer healthcare is the wrong debate?
The amount of the check matters more than the number of entities writing it.
Maybe we should debate pricing first.

@brittanytrang Healthcare sagas often repeat ;-)
I wrote this (2015) as a rebuttal to an epic @MotherJones rant that was popular.

In the end - gov has a lot of responsibility for lack of interop. Dr. Brailer said as much in Dr. Wachter's book. Also in 2015 ;-)
Dollar General makes $1.5 billion in profits, gives its CEO $8.1 million, spends $700 million on stock buybacks & pays cashiers $8/hour. Over 5,600 Dollar General workers need food stamps & Medicaid paid by U.S. taxpayers.
It robs customers, workers & taxpayers to enrich the 1%.
Tim Miller is on the Charlie Kirk Show and it's not going well for the hosts 👇
HOST: Nobody wanted Renee Good to die more than the left. I think that's very obvious
MILLER: That's an insane thing to say. That's really offensive actually
HOST: They actively get in the face of ICE
MILLER: And the punishment for that should be summary execution?
My heart goes out to the hardworking hospital staff and security team. What happened underscores why incident response plans need testing and how tabletop exercises can prepare teams for ransomware, executive impersonation, and data exposure.

Trust is the most important asset in the current world. Trust is the ground on which we all stand. But we are losing trust in each other and in human institutions, and instead increasingly trust only algorithms and AI.

@abettel ALL the lights are blinking red ..
* ~$38K/yr ESI coverage family of 4
* ~33% of GoFundMe campaigns involve medical needs
* ~100+M Americans w/ HC debt
* ~$194B in Med Debt is in active collection
* 43% of adults say they have not taken Rx as prescribed in past year due to costs
Lowering premiums isn't the same as lowering HC costs.
Less-regulated plans may reduce premiums (by shifting risk, narrowing coverage, or increasing out-of-pocket exposure), but that's just rearranging the bill - not fixing the real problem. Price.

Frankfort should open the market to quality, affordable, enforceable health insurance from established carriers, with a named regulator and an enforceable contract standing behind every policy.

We absolutely do need to end employer-sponsored insurance (ESI), but we keep debating who should pay for healthcare when we haven't solved the more fundamental problem: what we pay.
https://t.co/q2lxLPksqa
Another example of why health coverage shouldn't be tied to employment, and be gated by cost.
Medicare for All will protect Americans physically and financially.
Watching the evolution of coverage is getting more and more concerning. The U.S. uninsured rate rose from 8.9% in 2024 to 11% in 2026, and nearly half of working-age adults had gaps, with either no coverage or too little coverage. We are trending in the wrong direction.

@HedgeyeEEvans LOL - and until we have THAT debate we're just rearranging deck chairs.
FWIW - I cite several examples (international AND domestic) of managed pricing working today:

@DavidJanke_CRE@JohnCarreyrou For my money - the @alexgibneyfilm doc was pretty definitive.
For me - YCSE is more like a couple of grifters selling ambiguity - which *might* have had a chance w/o Billy ;-)
Great ending too - where they're both cavorting in the ocean - in front of the $6M "rental cottage."
"You Can See Everything is a film about the tension between two modes of deception. Holmes uses deceit to tell big lies, and Fielder uses conceit to tell strange truths. The film ends with a strangely moving shot of them playing together in the ocean. Maybe this is just another joke, with the documentarian drowning the last morsels of his reliability as a narrator. Or maybe, in the end, there’s something honest happening in the water, as two masters of artifice see in each other that rarest thing: an unerring commitment to the bit."
@HedgeyeEEvans Forecasting spending for ~18% of GDP isn't an exact science.
Yes, many of the APM experiments were overly optimistic - but we keep debating HOW to pay for HC and ignoring WHAT we pay.
Until we tackle pricing head-on, we're just rearranging deck chairs.

I'm in my 40s. I'm a lawyer. My wife is a lawyer. We both work full time.
We cannot afford the house my parents purchased on a single electrician's income in their 30s.
We cannot afford the house my immigrant grandparents purchased on a single MTA bus driver's salary in their 30s. They had SIX CHILDREN.
For 30 years, politicians in Washington & their oligarch allies convinced regular people that this was just about avocado toast and fancy coffee.
In reality, this is end-stage capitalism. Everyone is stuck in place. It's impossible to buy a home. It's too costly to move. We work too much to have passion projects. We don't have enough savings to start our own businesses. We can't afford to go without healthcare to do it.
Thanks for writing this article @troy_closson. Would be very happy to discuss further.

In addition to being unbelievably racist, this is also (obviously) totally false.
Multiple Arab winners of the Nobel Prize (Bawendi, Karman, etc). And the Wolf Prize (Zeweil, Yaghi). And literature (Mahfouz, El Saadawi, etc).
RFK Jr is a disgrace.
"We estimate that Mr Trump’s policies will cost the poorest tenth of American households, with average income after taxes and transfers of around $37,000, almost 3% of their income. The richest tenth, with average after-tax incomes of nearly $500,000, will gain nearly 3% (see chart 1). Households in the middle, with average income of roughly $100,000, lose more than $400"
The ACA attempted to reform healthcare WITHOUT touching actual healthcare prices.
Prices continue to escalate because commercial prices are *wildly* variable and largely uncapped.
Stop blaming ACA for problems it was never designed to solve.

In 2009, Goldman signed an open letter supporting the ACA "primarily because the ACA promised to 'bend the cost curve' of American health care."
But, "I could hardly imagine what would come next":
"The curve did not bend, and I now wish I hadn’t signed my name to that letter."
