Cybersecurity researcher: I found that Flock did not require their clients to use multi-factor authentication. This led me to find Flock law enforcement accounts for sale by a Russian vendor on a dark web marketplace. In addition to this, we found insufficiently protected sensitive information stored on Flock cameras, including photos, license plate data, logs, API keys, passwords, and communications.
LAWSUIT: Eight officers raided his home before dawn.
His offense? He filmed an officer speeding, criticized him when he got to a drive-thru, and embarrassed the department.
In a free country, criticizing police shouldn’t end in handcuffs.
In 2022, Joshua Gibbons filmed a Kingsport, Tennessee police SUV speeding without lights or sirens, violating state law.
He caught up with the officer at a drive-thru and had salty words about his disregard for the law.
That exchange lasted all of one minute. The consequences for Joshua lasted four years.
After someone complained about a different video — an officer flipping Gibbons off — police scoured Gibbons’ YouTube channel for ammunition.
Before dawn the next morning, while Gibbons was still in bed, eight armed officers raided his mother’s home to arrest him — for speeding using a cellphone while driving, and disorderly conduct.
A judge dismissed the speeding and cellphone charges but convicted him of disorderly conduct, saying he was “offended by the way” Gibbons was “talking to that officer.” Gibbons appealed. At a second trial, a jury again found him guilty.
In June, the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals unanimously reversed that conviction and dismissed the charge.
The court found “no evidence” that Gibbons’ criticism prevented anyone from doing anything lawful.
The court recognized — as many courts had held — that even “profane and insulting” words alone aren’t a crime, especially when directed at police officers, who are trained to exercise restraint.
With FIRE’s help, Gibbons is suing to vindicate his First Amendment rights.
The First Amendment protects your right to film and criticize police. Kingsport PD needs to hear that message loud and clear.
The F-35 parts that were accidentally shipped to China, a cockpit canopy and bay door, have been taken into possession by the Chinese government, according to Bloomberg, citing people briefed on the matter. The parts were from an Australian Air Force F-35 that was being shipped to the U.S. for inspection or disposal, per the report.
Zero-day remote code execution vulnerability in iPhone Safari. Click a link, and your crypto, passwords and everything else on your iPhone are gone.
Exploited in the wild by "DarkSword" malware.
"The DarkSword attack program has leaked, with its core capability being: extracting forensic-level data from iOS devices via HTTP interfaces. In actual attacks, attackers can combine social engineering or watering hole attacks to lure users into falling victim, thereby stealing data from iPhone / iPad devices and uploading it to servers controlled by the attackers."
Update iPhones immediately. Apple originally patched this, but rumours suggest even the latest versions are vulnerable, “pending confirmation,” across a wider range than the original 18.4–18.7 window.

‼️ China has been recruiting US military personnel to smuggle secret U.S. Army hard drives that prosecutors say were sold to Chinese buyers.
A former Army soldier in Oregon pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiring to gather and transmit national defense information. Ruoyu Duan, 41, recruited two friends still on active duty at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and sold what they took to buyers in China.
It started with a job offer. In 2021 Duan introduced Capt. Li Tian to a Hong Kong contact who wanted a white paper on investment opportunities. Tian got $1,500, then a request for a second paper on his experience managing assets for the Army.
After that, Tian dealt with Duan directly: Stryker brigade documents, technical manuals for an armored vehicle, intelligence reports, all under distribution controls.
They had names for it. The documents were "teaching materials." The handoffs were "lessons." Duan's payments were "tuition."
Agents found 27 intelligence-report files in his Hillsboro home. He was drawing VA disability at the time, medically discharged in 2017 after an on-duty injury.
His first lawyer said Chinese intelligence officers recruited him while posing as headhunters, and that the material was unclassified, some of it public, much of it years old.
Duan also connected Sgt. Jian Zhao to Chinese buyers and moved the money between them.
Both soldiers have pleaded not guilty. Duan is sentenced Dec. 19.
‼️ Huawei is on trial for spending two decades taking trade secrets out of American companies.
On Wednesday, prosecutors showed the jury 54 seconds of what they say that looked like.
Surveillance video from inside T-Mobile's locked robotics lab shows a man reach behind Tappy, the robot T-Mobile built to tap and swipe phone screens, pull out a component and zip it into a black backpack.
Prosecutors say he is a Huawei employee.
They also put an internal Huawei email in front of jurors acknowledging that T-Mobile "would not want to share the details about the robot technology," and say the requests kept coming anyway.
Huawei has pleaded not guilty and says a handful of engineers broke lab rules on their own.
I'm too excited, so I'm jumping the gun a bit early here.
I'm announcing Halo 5: Reforged.
This is my love letter to the Halo Community, and probably one of the things I feel most proud of working on in recent years.
I'm bringing all of Halo 5 to PC, plus some more!
Stay tuned.
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
