@BredBoy01@LinkofSunshine I’d prefer this solution too for a variety of reasons. That doesn’t mean, however, that rent freezes don’t come with the same problems when housing is held by the public sector! There’d be big incentives to constantly subsidise the system through increasing tax income.
@LinkofSunshine The second- and third-order effects are downstream of the first and could be at least partially mitigated through other policies. Pounds in pocket go a long way to generating support for those less popular, more sophisticated policies. But you need to see it to understand it.
@LinkofSunshine A rent freeze is
1) a transfer from haves (landlords) to have-nots (tenants)
2) a transfer from have-nots (house seekers) to haves (tenants)
3) a transfer from have-nots (looking to rent) to haves (looking to buy)
For existing tenants, it’s overwhelmingly positive short-term.
@TrueSlazac The consistent posturing everyone has to do around rent control either being a panacea or blatant demagoguery is so tiring. Why can every other economic policy be rightly viewed as a trade off but when it comes to rent control it’s either just good or bad.
Grootste doorhaalnacht aller tijden.
