@AlexBrundle Yeah, I heard an argument that this would give an advantage to lapped cars of a lap they didn’t have to carry fuel for, but it seems an acceptable trade off to get the race restarted quicker. They’d have to predict a late SC and being lapped in order to benefit

@SMitchellF1 No I accept your points, I guess my issue is more with the 1-2 lap standing start shootouts after red flags feeling way too artificial especially when a red flag wasn’t really necessary. Thanks for the good faith replies 👍🏻

@SMitchellF1 No, in that case there’s been a SC with totally valid reason for calling it, it’s done in time to go green for 1 lap, all’s fair.
The red flag & rolling start I could see being a valid compromise IF there’s no free tyre change under red- then it’s basically the same as SC restart

@SMitchellF1 I would argue it’s a whole lot less fair though and that’s my point. 1 is the race director making in his judgement the necessary intervention to respond to an incident, the other is a totally unnecessary response just to manufacture a green flag finish for entertainment

@SMitchellF1 Idk I guess my point is a 5 lap SC mid race isn’t seen as particularly unsatisfying, why is it different at the end. Throwing red flags for anything happening at the end chucks away too much of the performance and strategy from most of the race

@SMitchellF1 If you’re leclerc, you’ve seen off everyone all race bar Kimi who hit trouble. If there’s time for SC restart well that’s just racing right. But if they call a red flag just cos it’s near the end, and now it’s a standing start with Russell next to you on fresh tyres? Seem fair?

@SMitchellF1 Ok in an ideal world there would have been no SC, but there was an incident requiring 1, & once it’s out they start unlapping cars & that’s how long it takes.
My issues not about the rules, it’s calling red flags for incidents that don’t require them purely for entertainment

@SMitchellF1 Yes we should be trying to speed up SC restarts and unlapping cars as far as possible, but throwing unnecessary red flags really isn’t the answer. If it weren’t for the tease of getting a restart, I don’t think today would have been an unsatisfactory finish.

@SMitchellF1 I hope this doesn’t push F1 down the route of red flags for any late incident instead of SCs. That’s way over the line from sport into sports entertainment for me. This race wasn’t heading for a grandstand finish after kimi hit trouble, why the need to manufacture something?
