IDC Directions 2026 is officially underway. The conversations shaping what comes next in AI, data, and enterprise transformation are already in motion.
This is just the beginning.

The wordcel/shape rotator distinction fails to answer who will own the future. A more meaningful cognitive distinction is Contextuals vs Verbatims.
Contextuals flexibly integrate information across levels using context and language to construct meaning. Verbatims excel at precise, literal processing but struggle to integrate meaning across contexts due to difficulties coordinating cognitive processes.
This difference in cognitive style, rather than specific skills, will shape the future.
.@IDC Chief Research Officer @meredithwhalen introduces the #IDCDirections audience to the work our research team has been up to over the past many months building research across infrastructure, security, data/models, services and experiences for this AI moment.
“But I saved the history on CD, DVD, Magnetics”
That data will all decay in a MTBF of +\-50 years.
The cloud is deleting as much data that is being produced daily.
At some point in the future we would have lost a majority of the 2000s-2040s.
We are the amnesia generation.
Hypothetical: an American reporter has embedded with an enemy unit of the United States during war and they are preparing to ambush an American platoon. Do you film/report it or do you warn the American platoon of the ambush? Westmoreland, Scowcroft, Jennings, and Wallace discuss
We said ‘never again.’ The UK was a safe haven. Now, after the biggest massacre of Jews since the holocaust, British Jewish children are being advised to hide their identities as they walk to school, for their own safety. There should be mass outrage that this is necessary.
October 10 marks the birthday of my late son, Danny, who would have been 60 today. A diehard humanist who wanted to believe that man is not a predator to other men. We hoped that his brutal murder would mark a turning point in the history of man inhumanity to man. Saturday's massacre in Israel negates any such hopes. Today my heart goes to the families of so many Israeli families who are still waiting for information about their missing love ones. I know what they are going through.
Police warned Jews to not attend our most famous landmark last night. What was supposed to be a show of solidarity with the Opera House lit up in the colours of the Israeli flag turned into this:
All Americans should be horrified and outraged by the brazen terrorist attacks on Israel and the slaughter of innocent civilians. We grieve for those who died, pray for the safe return of those who’ve been held hostage, and stand squarely alongside our ally, Israel, as it dismantles Hamas. As we support Israel’s right to defend itself against terror, we must keep striving for a just and lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
Khamenei’s official position is clear that the eradication of Israel is the actual goal, not just supporting Palestinians.
That will not happen. All that actually happens, decade after decade, is a never-ending cycle of violence and vengeance.
Stoking the fires of hatred isn’t working. Perhaps it is time to consider something else.
Yesterday demonstrated why turning Twitter into X has changed everything.
If you don't believe me, look at how the media covered yesterday.
The worldview shared by most elites no longer has a monopoly over what we see with our own eyes. That alone is worth $44 billion.
