Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Sunday (Dec. 14) expressed pride in the strong spirit of national solidarity demonstrated by the Cambodian people as the country faces challenges stemming from aggression by a neighbouring country.
In a message posted on his social media, the prime minister wrote:
โI am proud to witness the powerful force of Khmer national solidarity at a time when our country is facing hardships due to aggression from a neighboring country.
The king, leaders, civil servants at all levels, and citizens of all political tendencies and religions, both at home and abroad, have demonstrated unwavering national unity, standing firmly behind our heroic armed forces and national police who are courageously carrying out their duties to protect Cambodiaโs sovereignty and territorial integrity.
May this great spirit of Cambodian national solidarity continue to serve as a vital source of strength to support and encourage our heroic armed forces and national police as they continue their mission to defend the nationโs territory. The Royal Government stands with the people, as well as with our heroic armed forces and national police, at all times.โ
Thai influencer Manassatian Luprasert published a manipulated image depicting President Donald J. Trump being violently drop-kicked in the face by a Thai soldier. The post received over 122,000 positive reactions.
This is not humor or satire. It is the promotion of political violence against a sitting U.S. president.
The United States and Thailand trade approximately $88 billion annually and maintain long-standing security and defense cooperation. Publicly glorifying violence against the leader of a strategic partner is reckless and damaging to bilateral relations.
This does not represent all Thai people, but it does reflect a serious failure to condemn extremist content from influential voices.
Given the nature of the image and the scale of engagement, the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Secret Service should review and investigate this matter to determine whether it constitutes a threat, incitement, or coordinated disinformation targeting the President of the United States.
Silence sends the wrong message.
Political violence must be rejected.
Allies must hold influencers accountable.
Respect between nations matters.
