@ddmeyer Love this discussion! I might have students play with the graphing tool, graph y=x and have them graph various slopes (really small and really large) and talk about patterns so they develop a sense about “steepness”
@mathteacherjedi @ddmeyer My students also enjoy a good prompt and a breakout room/ small group. They are more lively in their discussion, and I often notice that they turn on video and want to see each other as they work in a group. 🤷🏼♀️ Still no expectation, just noticings!
@mathteacherjedi @ddmeyer I have been using PearDeck to have students from Grade 2 to college be able to draw and write about their thinking. I can see all their ideas, they can interact in visual spoken and written form... it’s working well as one tool in the tool bag.🤷🏼♀️
Found this little beauty on an L.A. elementary class wall. All content areas will benefit from the day we have a common collective understanding that depth of understanding is more valuable and more useful to measure than speed. #iteachmath#tmwyk
@ddmeyer@JohnHolbein1 Am I reading the axis correctly? Around 2% of offenders in 2011 are whit and around 5% Hispanic or Black? What about the other 93%?
@ddmeyer Perhaps what’s at the root of all of this is wrestling with a common belief in the ultimate need for independent work production... when/why do students need to be doing math in isolation.
@KentHaines @Trianglemancsd And Zeus on the Loose!! Such a great game for counting on, adding, and the “make 10” strategy!! Love, love that game! A new favorite of ours that is maybe a pared down version of Otrio is “Gobblers”, a monster tic tac toe game. I highly recommend!
@KentHaines @Trianglemancsd I love the recommendations here! I feel playing games with kids is just as important as reading with them! (Gasp, I know, but seriously!) My 6 yo (who reads way above grade level 😉) loves Kingdomino, as do I! She uses “groups of” mult ideas to calculate the score for everyone!
@zeezee80@ddmeyer What we make a big deal out of in the classroom communicates our highest values and goals for students... using a system such as this (devoting LOTS of time and emphasis) shows they value... obedience? Quiet? Is this our highest value??
Another great game! Zeus on the Loose, a fun game that provides lots of opportunities for the “Make a 10” strategy as you play cards and steal the Zeus figurine when you stop on a multiple of 10. We scaffolded with a 100 chart my 5 yo made herself! #tmwyk
This seemingly simple game has provided hours of fun for my 6 yo ( & parents). From quick single digit sums (adding dice) to diff ways to compose a # (knocking down planks) to adding by 10s and 1s (keeping track of accumulated score)... so much math! #tmwyk
I noticed, and then I wondered... “Why??” Looking for room 223, I turned right, only to be confronted with descending even numbers... 226, 224, 222 #tmwyk And also your building designers...🤷🏼♀️
@jcpenney Epic fail in clothing choice for girls! This message is abhorrent, and perpetuates toxic ideas! Truly, you are championing an idea that boldly tells young girls to give up on their dreams in trade for vicarious living on IG? Shame on you!
@stevenstrogatz Thoughts on this?... we use Alg tiles and investigate possible interpretations of the - in -3(-5). We “show” one idea with the tiles, interpreting the - as “minus”, as in 0 - 3(-5). With a field of zero pairs, you can remove 3 groups of -5, and you see a net value of 15. #tmwyk
