As a Belgian guy on DTV in Bangkok (high floor, 40th), here’s my real experience after months here:
✅ DTV = 5 years validity. 180 days per entry + cheap 180-day extension inside → basically exit once/twice a year. 90-day report to immigration only if you stay continuous (resets when you leave, super easy and cheap if you go around like Vietnam).
✅ Cost of living? Only expensive if you party in fancy spots every night. I’m 20-30 min from center by bike, work from my apt (no coworking), bike everywhere → transport (BTS) = almost free. Rent is decent, Western food a pricier than Thai but still cheaper than Belgium. I usually order double portions or cook → protein is way cheaper homemade.
✅ Health insurance? Pays a fraction of Belgian social security and covers me insanely well (direct billing even for normal visits).
✅ Taxes: 0% on foreign income (structured right), I pay ~15% effective vs +50% in Belgium. Huge win.
✅ Integration? Depends on respect & vibe.
✅ Relationship? My Thai GF works & pays sometimes, not every girl is hunting farangs.
Negatives I feel too: 🔥 heat is brutal (I stay inside or go out early/late/weekend indoor + AC), pollution (manageable high up with purifier + mask on orange days).
Still love it. Adapt, don’t abuse the party life, and Thailand treats you amazingly. Southern Cone might suit some better.
