Some very wealthy people are arguing it’s unfair to close inheritance tax loopholes because they bought farmland specifically to avoid inheritance tax. What’s odd is that they’re making that case *out-loud*. And seem to think it’s an argument that will provoke sympathy.
Anyone who joins a zoom / teams meeting more than 3 minutes before it's scheduled start time clearly does not have enough work to do and should be flagged to management as underperforming.
Welcome to the topsy-turvy world of farm lobbying... 🙃
"Small farms will be broken up and they'll all be bought by big landowners, this is the end of farming as we know it."
Reality:
🤫big landowners* currently buying up farmland because they get unlimited IHT relief
😩 pushing up prices for everyone else including small tenant farmers who want to buy
🧐 actual small farms unaffected by this reform because £3m farm still pays no IHT in practice
Capping IHT relief is part of the solution for small farms, not the problem!
Cardi B, who is campaigning with Kamala Harris today in Milwaukee, is a policy nerd and an FDR historian.
I loved when her high school history teacher defended her on Facebook.
According to the Daily Mail on 3rd May this year:
Jeremy Clarkson bought his 312-acre farm in 2012 for £4.25million so that:
"he would not be required pay death duties on the land"
#Budget2024
If Rachel Reeves had had the guts to raise fuel duty by 6p/litre she could have raised enough money (£3bn) to make every single bus journey in the UK free for everyone, every day, every year.
When I quoted an opinion piece last week that said it was time to call Trump a fascist, the abuse I got back made me mute the conversation.
But there’s abuse and calling for people you disagree with to face a firing squad
Unless the government is planning to close all the farms & make all the farmers redundant then no this is not remotely like the closure of the mines and in any case the closure of the mines was mercilessly applauded by the Telegraph and its readers at the time. Unbelievable cunts
I’m so proud of my university - the @UofGlasgow - for doing this : bestowing a doctorate on the remarkable @JaneyGodley
Janey is a force of nature: funny, clever & brave. Her #ovariancancer journey has been both heartrending to watch & inspiring.
Thinking of Janey & her family.
I just saw an old lady collect a £30 scratch card win. Thrilled, she then gave £10 to a RNLI fundraiser.
This is how British society functions, with essential services funded by those with little.
Why is this ok but VAT on private schools or increasing capital gains tax isn't?
