@MTN180@MTNNG It not just my line, you can hardly access the Internet with MTN inside UCH premises. Recently I received numerous complaints about your network. @henryars_ also made same complaint last week.
Our CFO asked me to "audit" our software subscriptions last week.
He sent me a spreadsheet with 200 rows. Slack, Zoom, Jira, Notion, Trello, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
He wanted me to survey the team to see which tools were essential.
I told him: "Surveys are for people who care about feelings. I care about OpEx."
I deleted the spreadsheet.
Instead, I logged into the corporate Amex portal and reported the card as lost.
Every single auto-renewal in the company failed instantly.
I call this "The Scream Test."
It’s simple Darwinian procurement.
If a tool goes down and nobody runs to my desk screaming within 4 hours? We didn't need it.
The Marketing team was at my door in 10 minutes begging for Adobe. We renewed it. The Sales team was crying about the CRM in 20 minutes. We renewed it.
But here’s the interesting part.
The HR department’s "Employee Wellness & Engagement Portal" ($12,000/year) has been down for six days.
Not a single person has noticed.
I didn't just save money. I quantified the exact value of our corporate culture.
It is zero.
Stop auditing. Start unplugging. If it’s important, they’ll scream. If they don't scream, it’s just noise.
STOP TRYING TO BE FOR EVERYONE.
It’s the single biggest mistake that sinks promising startups.
Founders often dream of a huge market, thinking that a bigger pond means more fish. But in reality, when you launch, you’re a tiny boat in a vast ocean. Yelling for "everyone" to notice you just makes your voice disappear in the wind.
The TRUTH is, most people don't want to buy new things. They are comfortable with their current tools, even if they complain about them.
But there's a special group of people out there.
They aren't just a little thirsty; their hair is on fire. They are in so much pain from a specific problem that they are actively, desperately searching for a fire extinguisher.
These are your early adopters.
Your first job is not to build a product with a hundred features. It's to find this tiny group and solve their "hair-on-fire" problem so perfectly that they can't imagine going back to the old way.
Here’s how to do it:
✅ FOCUS ON A NICHE WITHIN A NICHE.
This means going deeper than a broad category. Don't just target "marketers." Target "B2B marketers at SaaS companies who struggle to create video testimonials." That level of specificity is where you find people with urgent problems.
✅ SOLVE ONE PROBLEM COMPLETELY.
Instead of being an average solution for ten different issues, become the undisputed, go-to solution for that one painful job. Your goal is to be the only name they think of when that specific problem comes up.
By dominating this small beachhead, you build a base of true believers. They become your case studies, your biggest fans, and the evangelists who carry your message to the wider market.
That is how you build an empire NOT by starting big, but by starting small and mattering deeply.
What is the single most painful, "hair-on-fire" problem your first customers are trying to solve?
Describe it in the comments. 👇
