Dear friends, the beautiful market town of Abergavenny has been hit by a dreadful fire, overnight. It is known for its many independent businesses & I am asking you to support those able to trade online. It's already tough out there without this! Please use #supportAbergavenny.
The advice to not use camera angles in your screenwriting is solid. But not because you shouldn’t direct on the page.
Camera angles are technical, clunky, unemotional, and uninteresting to read.
But you should absolutely direct on the page.
You want to guide the reader through the visual and emotional journey of this story.
You dictate what grabs their attention and what they ignore...
You give them a POV to share, who to root for, and what to fear.
So yes, you will direct the movie the reader sees in their mind.
And you will do so on the page.
You just won't be calling out camera angles to do it.
