Ruha Benjamin @ruha9 at @AlliedMediaConf: "The data alone cannot save us. We need the poets and storytellers to describe context, undue discourse, and dismantle the New Jim Code." #AMC2018
Hey, y'all, @deepcenter is hiring a community organizer. We're especially looking for folks who work from a framework of cultural organizing and understand criminal and juvenile justice reform efforts across the South.

.@stephaniejonesa & @hilaryehughes speak truth abt education (and, frankly, all production) at this moment
"There is no 'transforming' face-to-face teaching & learning into Covid-19 teaching and learning overnight. And even if that was possible, doing so might not make sense..."
How one small town at the center of the outbreak has cut infections virtually to zero: test all 3,300 in town, isolate the 3 percent who tested positive. Infection rate 10 days later down to .3 percent. https://t.co/5Tgpa7cCgl
"It looks like the coronavirus is being weaponized as yet another element to bring down Donald Trump. I’m dead right on this. The coronavirus is the common cold, folks." --

BREAKING: Sacramento County judge authorizes the Sheriff's Office to release jail inmates with 30 days or less remaining in their sentences. Ordered signed today and in effect until May 30. Includes misdemeanors and felonies. @MarshallProj
No industry -- not airlines, not hotels, not cruise ships -- should be bailed out. They can stay in business by borrowing at rock-bottom rates, using their assets as collateral.
Taxpayer money should be used to bail out people, not corporations.
For the media the bar is so sooo low.
It’s described as ‘remarkable’ and there are calls to ‘applaud’ the President being ‘the kind of leader we need”—‘at least in tone.’
This kind of take is embarrassing and pathetic.
Finally the President appears to be doing his job.
It's not easy to cede the moral high ground at this moment, with our elected officials lying, ignoring science, and shrugging their way through a crisis that promises to kill thousands, but kudos to the @DNC for giving it their all.

@scottsantens There is a *huge* difference between UBI proposals that kick millions of people off Medicaid, SNAP, etc (aka people ending with net less $) w/o consent and a UBI proposal that provides people with net more in their lives.
Conflating the two is dangerous and creates resistance.

@JuanSaaa@latimes@ICEgov just threatened to pick up a client of ours whose appeal is pending, because she missed an ISAP phone call, as her employer required her to work her minimum wage job and she could not answer the phone. Then they threatened to arrest the whole house when they come.
We've done direct payments to individuals in previous recessions (including the "recovery rebates" in 2008). One-time Keynesian stimulus when economy is bad ≠ monthly universal payments in perpetuity, regardless of economic conditions
And the intentional use of #COVID19 as a cover to double down on policies and practices harming our most disempowered community members is breathtaking.

The institutional cruelty we're witnessing re: #COVID19 is forcing me to totally rethink my working theories on conservative obstructionism.

Mitch McConnell has wasted four days in the middle of a pandemic. Now Republican Senators are using procedure to cover for him. @SenatorDurbin is right – enough with the excuses. The Senate should do its job.
