President Tinubu approves salary increases for armed forces personnel

President Bola Tinubu has approved salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for Nigeria’s armed forces personnel.

About 250,000 personnel are to benefit from the new deal.

Under the new arrangement, which becomes effective from September 1, officers above the rank of colonel will enjoy a 30 per cent salary increase. This applies to Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals.

Personnel from colonel down to warrant officer will have a 50 per cent increase, while Private to Staff Sergeant will have an 80 per cent increase.

The pay package will increase the yearly salary bill for the country's armed forces personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion.

President Tinubu has always praised the courage and sacrifices of members of the armed forces as they confront the scourge of banditry, kidnapping and terrorism in some parts of the country.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.

“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties.

“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians

“ I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation”.

KIDNAPPED STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN OYO STATE RESCUED FOLLOWING, SURGICAL INTENSE AND WELL COORDINATED OPERATIONS IN OLD OYO NATIONAL PARK AND OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY

1. Following an intelligence-led carefully planned and executed operations, on 10 July 2026, troops of the Nigerian Army, led by the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, *Major General CR Nnebeife*, in collaboration with special units from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) specifically the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC),the Defence Headquarters with Special Forces elements from the Nigerian Army, Navy the Air Force and the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other security agencies as well as local vigilantes/hunters/Amotekuns, in a well coordinated operation rescued a total of 44 pupils and teachers kidnapped by terrorists from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on 15 May 2026.

2. The operations, which lasted for more than a month, focused on identifying the terrorists kingpins that masterminded the kidnapping, bursting and dismantling their networks and logistics links, including their informants and hideouts located within the Old Oyo National Park Forest, Oyo State.

3. As part of the operations, multiple arrests were made within Oyo State and in other locations across some States in the Country. These arrests completely disorganized the group, exerted overwhelming pressure on them and ultimately led the terrorist group to *unconditionally release* the pupils and teachers. Further operations are to be conducted.

4. It suffices to note that the operations were carefully planned and executed to avoid collateral damages and to equally ensure that the innocent children and teachers were safely rescued. However, there were some casualties on the part of the security forces.

5. The pupils and teachers are currently receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital and will be handed over to the Oyo State Government in due course so as to be reunited with their families.

6. The GOC 2 Division wish to on behalf of all the participating agencies most sincerely and respectfully thank and appreciate His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for the Strategic Guidance, Support and for all the provisions that made the operations a huge success.

7. The GOC also wishes to once again thank the Governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde and indeed the good people of the State for their continous support to security agencies especially during the trying period.

8. The GOC also appreciates the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Hon Minster of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff and other Service Chiefs, Inspector General of Police and the Directors General DSS and NIA as well as Heads of other Security Agencies for their support and for the opportunity to relate directly with all the security agencies to ensure a seamless coordination and execution of the operations.

9. We sincerely thank the various media houses and indeed the entire Nigeria populace for their support, understanding and for having faith in the security architecture of the Nation. Someone needs to collate all the debate material, audio/video between Muhammad Yusuf, the founder of BH, and Clerics like the Late Sheikh Idris Dutsen Tanshi, Mallam Isah Ali Pantami…etc and lectures by Late Albani Zaria, Late Sheikh Ja’afar…etc. There is a treasure trove of information that could provide clarity into the ideological dogma of BH/ISWAP/Ansaru…etc, and would put things into clear academic perspective preserved for the future so as to enable horizon scanners, to build resilience against what could come in the future.

For the Military, such documentation could form the basis of materials for training at the Officer Cadet level, and other strategic levels of Military Command trainings.

Nigeria owes the world the history and evolution of this cancer that we are still fighting, but more than anything else, as a lesson learnt the hard way, and a story that is still unfolding.

This is St. Peter’s College (Junior), Olomore in Ogun State, remains in a deplorable and dilapidated condition, with students forced to learn in old, worn-out classrooms that are no longer fit for a safe and conducive learning environment.

This is despite the fact that ₦127.6 million was reportedly disbursed in December 2024 to STILL EARTH LTD for the construction of a new classroom block in the school.

Findings from Tracka’s monitoring visit reveal that no construction activity has commenced at the site.

There is no visible evidence of mobilisation, materials, or groundwork.

The existing structures remain aged and deteriorating, raising serious concerns about the safety and wellbeing of the students and teachers who use them daily.

What makes this situation even more troubling is that this project was captured under the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, an agency whose primary mandate does not include the renovation or construction of basic education infrastructure.

At a time when the Federal Ministry of Education and agencies responsible for basic education are underfunded, the allocation of education infrastructure projects to agencies outside their core mandate raises critical accountability questions.

The Ogun State Government has also budgeted billions of naira for the renovation and upgrading of school facilities across the state, yet St. Peter’s College (Junior), Olomore remains neglected.

We call on the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology to immediately provide full details of this project, including contract status and payment records, and to ensure prompt execution.

We also urge the @icpcnigeria and @officialEFCC to urgently investigate why ₦127.6 million disbursed for this project has not translated into visible progress on site.
Public funds must work for the people, especially for the education of our children.

Over ₦783.78 million meant to build classrooms for secondary school students in Ogun State has been traced to the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, an institution whose mandate is marine and fisheries education, not secondary school infrastructure.

According to findings by Tracka using data from GovSpend, ₦304 million was paid to Akinkas Interbiz Limited for a classroom block at Methodist High School, Arigbajo.

Another ₦303 million went to Still Earth Limited for St. Peter’s College, Olomore,

while ₦176 million was allocated again to the same company for work at Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi Aba.

In January 2026, Tracka’s field visits revealed a disturbing reality: no construction, no materials, no visible progress. Students are still learning in dilapidated structures while hundreds of millions of naira have already been disbursed.

Why is a marine focused federal institution supervising classroom construction in Ogun State? How were these funds approved, transferred, and supposedly executed without visible results? Who signed off on project completion? Who verified payment milestones?

This raises serious concerns about procurement abuse, weak oversight, and possible diversion of public funds. The beneficiaries of these allocations appear invisible but the suffering of students is not.

This is not a clerical error. It is a potential case of systemic corruption involving public institutions and contractors.

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission must immediately investigate these transactions, trace every payment, and hold all responsible officials and contractors accountable.

Public funds are meant to build classrooms, not disappear without a trace.

Since the enforced disappearance of Abubakar Idris, the social media commentator and critic better known as Dadiyata, in August 2019, this is the first time Nasir el-Rufai, the governor in whose territory Dadiyata disappeared, has publicly pointed accusing fingers at anyone. And that is Abdullahi Ganduje, former governor of Kano, yes, but more importantly former national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

El-Rufai ostensibly knows more than he volunteered on Arise. For two reasons. One, I do not expect an ex-governor to spotlight an ex-party chair on a murder (possibly) case without reason. And two, el-Rufai has known for some four years about this “confession” by a policeman without availing the public or other security agencies of this information. There’s obviously more he won’t be telling us until, say, 2030 or 2031.

What is now incontrovertible at this point: Dadiyata was exterminated by state forces, and someday his family will know his killers (If he isn’t found by August 2026, he becomes dead by law.).

We got a revelation from el-Rufai last night only because of his 2025 exit from the APC. In another five to 10 years when more political friendships would have crumbled under the weight of inordinate political ambitions, we will know the orchestrators of Dadiyata’s disappearance. My heart only goes out to Dadiyata’s friends and family, for whom a festering wound has now been freshly cut.
