@mathematize4all This week, we played an easy game that they’re super excited about…Get a 12-sided or 20-sided dice. Start w/50 points. Roll an even, ADD the number to your total. Roll and odd, SUBTRACT the number. Goal to get to 200. They loved it. Easy to start/stop wi/short time constraints.

@kassiaowedekind Oh - and the rainbow loom band group was very intentional with color…changing colors every 10 bands. The popsicle stick group also wanted to use different colors in stacks of 10 so people could see their 10s and know each group had 10 piles of 10 sticks.

@kassiaowedekind You are welcome to my classroom ANY time, @kassiaowedekind! Groups made progress when I pushed back and kept saying, “but how can I SEE that 50 are there and not 49 or 51?!” The pearler bead group resisted at first but uncapped their cups once a pearler bead board showed up.

I LOVE having kids work together to count, organize, record a collection of 1,000 visually. The best part? The conversations… the connections… the relationships…the JOY! #countingcollections (Where is the (100x5)x2 in the paper clip group?) Is 10x10x10 the same as 20 x 50?

@Trianglemancsd @meganlfranke @ekazemi @Angelaturrou On a similar note, how many holes are too many for a button? Love these packs of buttons with 9-holes! (One 3rd grader argued it actually had 10 holes because of the loop on the back, so she could justify counting by 10s instead.) I love listening to kids!

Love the thinking that is emerging from my 9 year old! She recorded all the groups she saw, then counted them by 10’s & 1’s to check. Yay for dry erase pens and sheet protectors for giving her the confidence to take a risk with her recording. #countingcollectionsathome
