Technology has transformed how we connect, learn, work and participate in society. But when digital spaces are used to harm, threaten, silence or control others, technology can also become a tool for violence.
Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) refers to the use of digital technologies to commit, facilitate or amplify gender-based violence.
It can take many forms, including online harassment, cyberstalking, threats, non-consensual sharing of intimate images, impersonation, doxxing, online sexual exploitation, hate speech and coordinated digital attacks.
The impact is not confined to the online space. TFGBV can affect a person’s mental wellbeing, safety, dignity, livelihood, relationships, participation in public life and ability to freely express themselves.
As young people increasingly occupy digital spaces, we must ask ourselves:
What kind of digital society are we building?
Speaking up against TFGBV means creating online environments where women and girls can participate without fear, where survivors are supported rather than blamed and where perpetrators are held accountable.
It also means moving beyond awareness to action:
📌 Know your digital rights.
📌 Challenge harmful online behaviour.
📌 Support survivors and avoid victim-blaming.
📌 Report abuse through appropriate channels.
📌 Protect your privacy and digital security.
📌 Promote respectful and inclusive digital spaces.
📌 Demand stronger systems that prevent and respond to online violence.
Digital rights are human rights. Safety, dignity, privacy, freedom of expression and equality must not disappear when we go online.
As a #MyDigitalRights Champion, I am committed to raising awareness, encouraging conversations and contributing to efforts that make digital spaces safer and more inclusive for everyone.
Let us speak up. Let us stand against TFGBV. Let us build a digital future where technology empowers rather than harms.
