Taking a break from my posts on @davidrberke’s book today to address something that’s been on my mind lately.
I want to talk about the "Alpha Male" myth.
In 25+ years of IT and MSP work, I’ve seen this trope play out a hundred times. We’re told that "real" leadership is about being the loudest, most aggressive person in the room. We’re told it’s about "dominating" the meeting and shutting down anyone who disagrees.
That isn’t leadership. It’s just posturing.
And it’s not a "male" thing, either. I’ve worked with plenty of women who had more backbone and grit than any self-proclaimed "Alpha" I’ve ever met. Leadership isn't about gender. It’s about character.
To me, the difference is simple:
• The Fake Alpha: He’s only looking out for himself. He uses his "pack" to make his own numbers look good or to stroke his own ego. He leads through fear because he’s actually terrified of being challenged, and he never admits when he's wrong.
• The Real Leader: They look out for the pack before themselves. They make sure the whole team "eats," meaning they make sure everyone is recognized, paid what they’re worth, and supported. They accept feedback, work on their faults, and strive to be the best possible role model.
Most importantly, a real leader builds the team to be able to fend for itself when they aren't around. If your company or department collapses the minute you take a vacation, you didn't lead. You just created a bottleneck.
Real strength isn't about being the "Top Dog." It’s about being the foundation that lets everyone else succeed.
Please answer in the comments: Have you ever worked for a "Fake Alpha"? How did it affect the team's morale or the actual work getting done?
