Tony Gonzalez explains why he believes specializing in one sport too early can actually cap your ceiling, explaining how basketball, surfing, skateboarding, volleyball and soccer helped turn him into one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history
“I wouldn’t have been able to achieve everything that I achieved in football without basketball. I think that was my offseason workout program, by the way. I would lift weights, but basketball is a lot of cardio. You’re running up and down, you’re using different muscles. I think it just makes your body overall healthier.”
“A big thing about basketball is you’re jumping up to catch the ball. You’re jumping up to get rebounds. So if you ever watch my tape, the one thing I know I did better than anybody in the history of tight ends was I could go up in traffic and catch the ball. Just throw it up there and I’m going to go catch it between two people, because that’s just a rebound for me. I’d constantly been doing that. It really helped with cardio, too. I never got tired on a football field.”
“The other part of that is kids nowadays, they discourage playing multiple sports so soon. My kid’s a freshman in high school, and I wanted him to play football and basketball because he likes both. And the coaches were like—the basketball coach, I could see it in his eye. He didn’t come out and say it, but he was like, ‘He’s going to play football?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, he’s going to play football.’”
“Why are we talking about specializing so soon? I can’t stand it right now. I think there’s a lot of reason why kids are getting hurt. I think it kills your ceiling, too. I did everything as a kid. It wasn’t just football and basketball. I surfed. I’m from Huntington Beach. I rode a skateboard. I did volleyball. I did soccer. I did all that stuff.”
“That’s where you develop your athleticism. That’s how you become truly dynamic out there, when you have this base of all these different sports that you play. And then you’ll specialize later. Of course. Like I did a little bit later.”

Very few MMA fights have all the elements required to be great. This one overflowed with them. Still a top five MMA bout and arguably the best heavyweight title fight in MMA ever. Definitely the best for its time and it holds up well today. Fedor circa 2002-2006 is unassailable.
